To choose a liposuction provider, ask who will actually perform the procedure, how many they have done, whether it is performed awake or under general anesthesia, whether skin tightening is part of the plan, what technology they use, whether they evaluate you before recommending anything, whether you can see unedited results from their own patients, and how they handle recovery. A provider who answers all eight clearly and specifically is one you can trust. Here is why each question matters and what a good answer sounds like.
Who will perform the procedure?
Not who owns the practice, not who did the consultation: who holds the cannula. In some practices the consult is with a physician and the procedure is delegated. Ask directly, and expect a direct answer. At ICON, Dr. Zayid performs every liposuction procedure personally.
How many have they done?
Liposuction is sculpture, and judgment about where to remove, where to leave, and how to blend transitions comes only with volume. A provider should be able to tell you a number without hesitation. Dr. Zayid has performed more than 1,000 awake liposuction procedures since 2023. Hundreds is good. Dozens is a reason to ask more questions.
Is it awake or under general anesthesia?
Awake tumescent liposuction uses local anesthesia and avoids the risks, recovery, and hospital setting of general anesthesia. It also lets the surgeon position you naturally and check contours in real time. General anesthesia has a place for very large or combined surgical procedures, but for most body contouring, awake is the safer and more precise choice. Ask which one the provider uses and why.
Is skin tightening included?
Removing fat without addressing the skin above it can leave laxity, especially in patients over 35 or after weight change. Ask whether skin tightening such as Renuvion is built into the procedure or offered as an afterthought. Integrated tightening in the same session is the standard that produces a smooth, contracted result.
What technology do they use?
Technology doesn't replace skill, but it reveals how seriously a practice invests in outcomes. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, power-assisted extraction, integrated skin tightening, and fat transfer capability on a modern platform such as the Apyx AYON tell you the provider has equipped the room for precision rather than speed.
Do they evaluate before they recommend?
A consultation that goes straight to pricing is a sales call. A real evaluation includes a body composition scan, a physical assessment of fat distribution and skin quality, and an honest conversation about what liposuction can and can't do for your anatomy, including telling you no when it isn't the right procedure.
Can you see real, unedited results?
Ask to see before-and-after photos of the provider's own patients, in consistent lighting and positioning, and ideally video of the procedure itself. Be wary of stock images, heavily edited photos, or results that can't be attributed to the practice. ICON's gallery shows ICON patients only, and our treatment pages include video of Dr. Zayid performing the procedures.
How do they handle recovery?
Ask about compression, lymphatic massage, follow-up visits, and who you call with a question at 9pm on a Saturday. A provider with a structured recovery protocol and accessible follow-up is a provider who stays accountable for the result after you leave. Read more about how ICON approaches each of these on our liposuction in Birmingham page.
