Follicular Unit Extraction, or FUE, is the modern standard in hair transplantation — and the NeoGraft system is the most advanced way to perform it. Rather than removing a strip of scalp, individual follicular units are harvested one by one from your donor area using pneumatic precision, then implanted into thinning or bare areas with exact control over angle, direction, and density. The result is hair that grows, sheds, and styles exactly like the hair around it, because it is your hair, permanently relocated.

At ICON, we apply the same NeoGraft FUE precision to three areas: the scalp, the beard, and the eyebrows. Every procedure is performed in-office, in a single visit, at our Birmingham location. Read patient stories →

Why NeoGraft FUE

Traditional strip harvesting leaves a linear scar across the back of the head and a longer, more uncomfortable recovery. NeoGraft's automated FUE uses controlled suction to extract each follicular unit gently and consistently, then a "no-touch" implantation technique that places grafts without handling them by hand — protecting the follicle and improving survival. There is no scalpel, no stitches, no linear scar, and no lengthy downtime: most patients are back to work within days, with the donor area fully healed in about two weeks.

How the Procedure Works

The animation below, from NeoGraft, shows the follicular unit extraction and no-touch implantation process step by step.

Your scalp is prepared and a local anesthetic keeps you comfortable throughout. Follicles are harvested from your donor area — typically the back and sides of the head, where hair is genetically resistant to thinning — and implanted into the treatment zone following a design mapped to your natural growth pattern. A protective dressing is applied before you head home the same day.

Three Areas, One Precision Technique

Scalp

Restoring the hairline, filling the crown, and rebuilding density through the top of the scalp. Suitable for men and women with pattern hair loss and a healthy donor area. For women, our Female FUE approach restores the part line, hairline, and temples without shaving the head — and every plan begins with the hormone and lab evaluation ICON is known for, because female hair loss often has hormonal drivers worth treating at the source.

Beard

Filling patchy or uneven beard growth, concealing scarring, and defining the beard line permanently. The design is mapped to your facial structure before a single graft is placed, and the result grows, shaves, and styles like the rest of your beard.

Eyebrows

Rebuilding overplucked, thinning, patchy, or scarred brows with real, permanently growing hair — a lasting alternative to daily makeup and repeated microblading. Each follicle is placed to follow the natural direction of brow growth for a result that reads as entirely your own.

Recovery and Results

Most patients return to work within a few days. The treated area fully heals within about two weeks, at which point you resume your normal routine without restriction. Transplanted hair typically sheds around the three-week mark before new growth begins — a normal, expected part of the process — with visible improvement from around month four and full results at ten to twelve months. Because the transplanted follicles come from your permanent donor zone, the result is permanent.

Many patients pair their transplant with oral therapy and regenerative injectables to protect surrounding native hair and support the new growth. Your consultation builds that complete plan. Explore our full hair restoration program →
