Mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin and physically reflects and scatters UV rays, while chemical sunscreen absorbs UV radiation and converts it to heat before it can damage skin cells. Both are effective at preventing sunburn and photoaging when applied correctly and reapplied every two hours — the right choice for you usually comes down to skin sensitivity, cosmetic finish, and lifestyle.

How mineral sunscreen works?

Mineral sunscreens rely on two active ingredients: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These minerals sit on the surface of the skin, where they reflect, scatter, and absorb UV radiation before it penetrates deeper layers. Because they work on contact, mineral sunscreen offers protection the moment it's applied, with no waiting period.

These two ingredients hold a distinction that no other sunscreen active currently carries: in its ongoing review of sunscreen safety, the FDA has proposed that zinc oxide and titanium dioxide be formally recognized as GRASE (generally recognized as safe and effective), while requesting additional safety data on the twelve chemical filters still in use before making the same determination for them.1

Mineral filters are also more photostable than many chemical filters, meaning they break down less in sunlight and hold their protective strength longer throughout the day. Zinc oxide, in particular, is well tolerated by sensitive and reactive skin, and both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are classified as Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE) by the FDA — a distinction most chemical filters do not currently carry.

How chemical sunscreen works?

Chemical sunscreens use organic compounds — common ones include avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, and homosalate — that absorb UV radiation and release it as a small amount of heat. Because these formulas blend into the skin rather than sitting on top of it, chemical sunscreens tend to feel lighter, apply more transparently, and layer more easily under makeup.

The tradeoff is that chemical filters typically need about fifteen minutes after application before they reach full effectiveness, and some formulas are less photostable, meaning they can break down with extended sun exposure and require more frequent reapplication.

Which one is right for you?

If you have sensitive, acne-prone, or reactive skin, or you're pregnant or treating a young child, mineral sunscreen is generally the safer starting point. If you want a lightweight, transparent formula for daily wear under makeup and don't have a history of sensitivity, a well-formulated chemical or hybrid sunscreen can work beautifully.

Many patients do well with a hybrid formula that combines a lower concentration of mineral filters with chemical filters, capturing some of the cosmetic elegance of chemical sunscreen with some of the tolerability of mineral. The most important factor in either case is consistency: broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, applied generously and reapplied every two hours in direct sun, is one of the single most effective things you can do to prevent premature aging and protect the results of any skin treatment.
