Laser treatments work by creating controlled, precise injury to the skin, and freshly treated skin is significantly more vulnerable to UV damage than skin that hasn't been treated. Sun exposure at the wrong time doesn't just risk a sunburn on sensitive skin — it can undo the results you had the treatment for in the first place, including triggering new pigmentation exactly where you were trying to reduce it.
Why does timing matter so much with lasers specifically?
Tanned or recently sun-exposed skin contains more active melanin, which absorbs laser energy unpredictably and increases the risk of burns, uneven results, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in medium to deeper skin tones. After treatment, skin is in an active healing state with a compromised barrier, making it far more prone to sun-triggered pigmentation than it normally would be.
Before your treatment
Most providers recommend avoiding significant sun exposure and tanning beds for two to four weeks before a laser treatment, and religious daily sunscreen use in the lead-up. Recently tanned skin is one of the most common reasons a treatment gets postponed, since treating over active tan meaningfully raises the risk of an uneven or unpredictable result.
After your treatment
- The first 1–2 weeks: strict sun avoidance and diligent, frequent mineral sunscreen reapplication — this is the highest-risk window for pigmentation issues
- Weeks 2–4: continued sun protection as skin finishes healing, even once visible redness or peeling has resolved
- Ongoing: daily SPF becomes even more important than usual, since freshly resurfaced skin is more UV-sensitive for months after treatment
What happens if you don't follow this?
Sun exposure during healing is the leading cause of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation after laser treatment — new dark patches that can take months to fade, sometimes requiring additional treatment to correct. In more significant cases, unprotected sun exposure on healing skin can also increase the risk of scarring or prolonged redness.
What kind of sunscreen actually works here?
Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) is generally preferred over chemical sunscreen on freshly treated skin, since it's less likely to cause irritation on a compromised barrier and starts working immediately rather than needing to absorb first. Reapplication matters as much as the product itself — sunscreen applied once in the morning doesn't protect you through an entire day outdoors.
