BBL, or BroadBand Light, is often described as an advanced evolution of IPL (intense pulsed light) technology — both use broad-spectrum light to target pigment and redness in the skin, but BBL delivers that light with greater precision, more consistent energy output, and interchangeable filters that allow more customized treatment than most traditional IPL devices.
How IPL works?
IPL has been used in dermatology and aesthetics for decades. It works by delivering pulses of broad-spectrum light into the skin, where it's absorbed by pigment in sun spots, redness from broken capillaries, and other vascular or pigmented concerns. That absorbed light energy heats and breaks down the targeted pigment or vessels, which the body then clears naturally over the following days to weeks.
How BBL builds on that foundation?
BBL, a proprietary technology developed by Sciton, operates on the same underlying principle as IPL but with meaningful refinements: more consistent and controllable pulse delivery, interchangeable smart filters that let providers fine-tune the exact wavelengths used for a specific concern, and precision thermoelectric cooling that improves comfort and reduces risk during treatment. These refinements give BBL a more precise, more customizable treatment experience than older or more generic IPL platforms, along with a stronger and more consistent energy delivery from pulse to pulse.
BBL has also been the subject of more extensive published research than most IPL platforms, including a landmark Stanford University study documenting BBL's effect on gene expression associated with skin aging and collagen production — research specific to the BBL technology rather than IPL as a general category.
What both technologies treat?
Both IPL and BBL are used to address similar concerns: sun spots and pigmentation, facial redness and broken capillaries, uneven skin tone, and mild textural irregularities.
