Erbium and CO2 are both ablative lasers, meaning they remove the outermost layers of skin to trigger dramatic resurfacing and collagen remodeling underneath. While CO2 has long been considered the traditional gold standard for deep resurfacing, Erbium has become the treatment we reach for most often, because it delivers meaningfully effective results with significantly less downtime and a lower risk profile for most patients.

How the two lasers compare?

CO2 lasers operate at a wavelength that generates more heat and thermal spread as it vaporizes tissue, which is part of why it can achieve such dramatic results on deep wrinkles, scarring, and significant sun damage in a single treatment. That same thermal depth, however, is also what drives its longer recovery window, typically one to two weeks of visible healing, along with a higher risk of prolonged redness and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in medium to deeper skin tones.

Erbium lasers, particularly fractionated Erbium platforms, target water in the skin with more precision and less surrounding thermal spread. This allows Erbium to remove damaged tissue and stimulate new collagen production while leaving more of the surrounding skin untouched, which translates into faster healing, typically three to seven days, and a meaningfully lower risk of the pigment changes that make CO2 a more cautious choice for many skin types.

Why do we favor Erbium for most patients?

For the majority of patients seeking improved texture, fine lines, and mild to moderate scarring, Erbium delivers excellent, visible results without asking patients to take one to two weeks away from work and daily life. Its more precise, controlled energy delivery also makes it a safer option across a broader range of skin tones, reducing the risk of the hyperpigmentation that can be a significant concern with CO2 in patients with more melanin-rich skin.

Erbium also allows for more customizable, session-by-session intensity, meaning treatments can be adjusted to a patient's healing capacity and schedule — something that's harder to do with the more all-or-nothing intensity of a full CO2 resurfacing session.

When CO2 may still make sense?

CO2 resurfacing still has a role for patients with significant scarring or very deep wrinkles who are seeking the most dramatic possible result in a single session and are able to accommodate the longer recovery. But for the vast majority of patients coming in for skin quality, tone, texture, and mild-to-moderate aging concerns, Erbium offers a more favorable balance of effective, visible improvement against downtime, cost, and risk.
