To choose an injector, look for structured training beyond the minimum certification, physician oversight, a whole-face approach rather than spot treatment, explicit safety practices including ultrasound for high-risk areas and hyaluronidase on hand, a full range of products, and a portfolio of unedited results on their own patients. The best injectors are defined less by what they add and more by the fact that no one can tell they added anything. Here is how to evaluate each factor.
How were they trained, and by whom?
A weekend course is the minimum to inject legally. It is not the minimum to inject well. Ask whether the injector completed a structured training program, who taught it, and how long it lasted. ICON runs its own injector fellowship, led by Dr. Zayid, a Galderma Key Opinion Leader, and no ICON injector treats patients until they've completed it.
Is there a physician involved?
Physician oversight means the techniques, protocols, and safety standards come from a doctor, and a doctor is available when something unexpected happens. Ask who the medical director is and how involved they are. A name on a wall is different from a physician who trains the team and develops its methods.
Do they plan the whole face or just the spot you point at?
The most common cause of an overdone look is treating features in isolation. Lips without regard to the chin. Cheeks without regard to the jawline. A skilled injector assesses the whole face, ideally in motion, and places product in proportion. Ask how they plan a treatment. If the answer starts with "how many syringes do you want," keep looking.
What are their safety practices?
Three specific questions: Do they use ultrasound before injecting high-risk areas such as the nose? Do they aspirate before placing filler? Do they keep hyaluronidase on hand to dissolve filler immediately if needed? These are the practices that prevent and manage the rare serious complications. A confident yes to all three is what you're looking for.
Do they offer a full range of products?
Different neurotoxins last different lengths of time. Different fillers have different firmness suited to different areas. Biostimulators, PRF, and growth factors solve problems filler can't. An injector who offers one neurotoxin and one filler will treat every face the same way. Ask what they carry and why they'd choose one over another for you.
Can you see their results on real patients?
Ask for before-and-afters of the injector's own work, in consistent lighting, without filters. The best portfolios look unremarkable at first glance, because the results look natural, and that is exactly the point. Then look closer at symmetry, proportion, and whether the "after" still looks like the same person, rested.
How do they handle a result you don't love?
Even excellent injectors occasionally need to adjust. Ask about their follow-up policy, whether touch-ups are part of the plan, and how they'd handle asymmetry or a result that settled differently than expected. The answer tells you whether they stand behind their work. Read more about how ICON answers all of these on our injectables in Birmingham page.
