Awake liposuction at ICON is body contouring performed using a customized tumescent technique rather than general anesthesia. You stay conscious throughout — comfortable, at ease, and able to walk out the same day — without the added risks, cost, and recovery burden that come with going under general anesthesia.

At ICON, awake liposuction is one of our most requested body treatments, built around a full liposuction suite of technology and a recovery process most patients find far easier than they expect.

A Customized Tumescent Technique, and a Comfortable Start

Before your procedure begins, we infuse the treatment area with a customized tumescent solution, tailored to your anatomy and treatment plan, which numbs the area thoroughly, minimizes bleeding and bruising, and prepares the tissue for precise, controlled fat removal.

When you arrive, you're given oral anti-anxiety medication, which makes the entire experience extremely tolerable — most patients describe feeling calm and at ease throughout, with pressure and movement but not sharp pain, thanks to the thorough numbing effect of the tumescent solution beneath.

The Full Liposuction Suite

Rather than relying on a single technique, we use a complete suite of technology matched to your specific anatomy and goals:

  • Ultrasound-assisted liposuction — using sound energy to help liquefy fat before removal, allowing for smoother, more precise extraction, particularly in denser or previously treated areas
  • Power-assisted liposuction — a gentle, mechanized cannula motion that removes fat more efficiently and with less physical trauma to the surrounding tissue than manual technique alone
  • Renuvion skin tightening — performed after fat removal to help the skin contract and conform smoothly to your new contour

Combining these technologies in sequence — rather than using any single one on its own — is what allows us to remove fat precisely while actively supporting the skin's ability to tighten around your new shape.

Entry Sites You'll Barely Notice

We take real care in where and how we place entry sites, hiding them in natural creases and inconspicuous locations whenever possible. These entry points shrink dramatically as they heal — down to as little as a two-millimeter dot by the twelve-month mark — and are barely noticeable at that stage.

Areas We Treat

Awake liposuction is versatile enough to address most areas where stubborn, diet-and-exercise-resistant fat tends to collect:

  • Abdomen and flanks — our most commonly treated area, for waist and midsection definition; see our dedicated Hourglass Liposuction technique for abdominal etching and waist contouring
  • Chin and neck — addressing submental fullness for a stronger jawline; see our dedicated Chin Liposuction protocol for the full skin-tightening and jawline-contouring approach
  • Arms — softening fullness along the upper arm; see our dedicated Ballerina Arms technique for arm-specific contouring
  • Thighs — inner, outer, and circumferential contouring
  • Back and bra line — an often-overlooked area that meaningfully affects how clothing fits

Many patients treat more than one area in the same visit.

Why We Prefer Awake Over General Anesthesia

General anesthesia carries real, well-documented risks — adverse reactions to anesthetic medications, respiratory complications, and a longer, harder recovery, on top of the pre-operative fasting and post-anesthesia grogginess that come with it. Awake liposuction, supported by oral anti-anxiety medication for comfort, avoids all of that.

What to Expect: Consultation Through Results

Consultation. We start with a thorough evaluation of your treatment areas, skin quality, and overall health to confirm you're a good candidate and to build a plan specific to your anatomy and goals.

Procedure day. After your oral anti-anxiety medication and the customized tumescent solution take effect, we use our full liposuction suite — ultrasound-assisted and power-assisted liposuction, followed by Renuvion skin tightening — through carefully hidden entry sites.

Recovery. Most patients return to work within two days and to full activity within seven days. A compression garment is worn to support healing and skin retraction during this time.

Results. Most patients are bikini ready in three months or less, with entry sites continuing to fade down to a barely noticeable two-millimeter dot by the twelve-month mark.
