Medical Weight Loss

While diet and lifestyle changes are a tried and tested method for long-term weight reduction, we understand that this alone is sometimes not enough to achieve our patients’ goals. We are happy to announce ICON Anti-Aging & Aesthetics is now offering a multitude of different approaches to weight loss including oral and injectable medications. Although these medications are FDA approved with results showing their efficacy, diet and exercise still remain crucial in not only achieving your weight loss goals, but reducing your risk and progression of chronic diseases related to obesity.

Semaglutide is an injectable medication that is FDA approved under the brand names Wegovy and Ozempic for the treatment of obesity & diabetes, respectively. Called, Glucagon-Like-Peptide-1 Agonists, these synthetic hormones act on the brain inducing a feeling of satiety (or “fullness”) to decrease portion size and snacking frequency. This combination lowers your caloric intake resulting in a proven reduction in weight over time.

These prescription medications are approved for use as an obesity treatment in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or a BMI of 27 and one or more weight-related medical conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease.

While this medication has been proven to be safe and effective in the treatment for obesity, not everyone with the above criteria qualifies as there are contraindications to these medications. Any patient with a personal of family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type II should be excluded from being placed on this medication.

The New England Journal of Medicine published results from the STEP 1 which was a research study investigating how well semaglutide ™ works in people suffering from overweight or obesity. The study concluded in showing an average 14.9% reduction in body weight over 68 weeks of treatment. That compares to 2.9% for placebo, 5-9% for other medications, or 5% for lifestyle changes and behavior therapy.

In addition to diet and lifestyle changes, Dr. Alex Zayid has used numerous oral medications that have been proven to assist in weight reduction in his practice. Medications FDA approved for weight loss include Contrave, Xenical and Adipex.
