Semaglutide FAQ

Tirzepatide is the generic version of Mounjaro or Zepbound (FDA approved for weight loss.) Semaglutide is the generic version of Ozempic or Wegovy (FDA approved for weight loss.) It is a once weekly injectable medication that reduces cravings and portions by making you feel full faster and longer. Semaglutide is a Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Agonist that acts on the brain inducing a feeling of satiety (or “fullness”) to decrease portion size and snacking frequency. This combination lowers your caloric intake resulting in a proven reduction in weight over time.

Semaglutide is a once weekly injectable medication that reduces cravings and portions by making you feel full faster and longer. By doing this, you reduce your caloric intake leading to weight loss. If you pair this with good dietary choices and weight lifting, your results will be even better. Long term maintenance is achieved by conditioning yourself to eat high protein, low carb meals in smaller portions. Results are usually 15-20% weight reduction, but many patients have seen even greater results.

While tirzepatide and semaglutide are both used to help patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity with weight loss and improve cardiovascular outcomes as a result of their weight-related conditions, there are some primary differences between the medications.

The primary differences between these medications are that they are 2 different classes of medications and target slightly different areas of the brain.

By targeting both the GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, tirzepatide is the only medication in its class. Tirzepatide works in different ways than semaglutide by activating both these receptors. On the other hand, Wegovy only targets the GLP-1 receptor agonist but it has been on the market longer than tirzepatide with more research and clinical evidence backing it.”

The New England Journal of Medicine published results from the STEP 1 which was a research study investigating how well Semaglutide ™ works in people suffering from overweight or obesity. The study concluded in showing an average 14.9% reduction in body weight.

Yes, as the FDA has placed Wegovy/Ozempic on the drug shortage list, Semaglutide is now able to be compounded in FDA audited, PCAB certified pharmacies. We only use specific pharmacies based on FDA compliance, efficacy and safety protocols that have allowed it to remain a publicly traded company on the New York Stock exchange.

While most patients do not experience side effects throughout the program, there are some mild side effects to be aware of. Just like any medication, there is a long list of possible side effects, but the most common is nausea. Nausea is worse when you first begin the medication, but gets better as time goes on and is overall very mild regardless. Constipation is another side effect that is often reported, but less common. Both of these are easily overcome with adequate hydration and over the-counter medications if needed. More severe side effects are very rare, but can occur. Please discuss severe abdominal pain, intractable vomiting/diarrhea or other symptoms with a healthcare professional.

We do not give this medication to those with a family history of MEDULLARY thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia as there is a theoretical risk of increasing tumors in these patients. Thyroid disease, such as hypothyroidism, is not a contraindication to this medication and many of these patients have seen great results on the program.

Yes this is a once weekly injection using a tiny insulin syringe. You are shipped all supplies along with an instructional packet that goes over every detail of the program, including dosing and administration. While we understand this sounds very unnerving, it is very easy to perform on your own. We will talk before your first injection to make sure the dose and administration
occurs correctly.

We do not offer 1 month programs, if we did it would not work logistically as processing is about 10 days at this time, so 1 month does not work very well. By the time you want to continue
treatment, you are left for 2 weeks without medication. The dosing itself in 1 month does not titrate and minimal benefits are experienced by patients.

While there is no lab testing required for this medication, as always we recommend patients
undergo annual testing with their primary care physician to make sure all other chronic
conditions are being screened and managed as needed.
